Golf

Course architect Arthur Hills has crafted 18 completely unique holes that sit among large white Oak trees, over ponds and open plains, and alongside a beautiful stretch of the Codorus Creek. Members have described the experience as 'the best in York'. The course layout was enough to earn its place as the home for the AJGA.

The course begins simply enough, with a front side laid out on gently undulating meadows, perfect for those who might like to walk a leisurely nine. The back side, however, is a little more hilly, and a little more difficult, with strategically placed bunkers, lakes and a hidden brook that lies in wait for miss-hit shots. A large, devilishly situated lake presents a breathtaking challenge on the eleventh tee. Those who dare to carry a large portion of this hazard will be rewarded with a shorter approach to the flagstick. But the hidden brook and deep bunker in front of the green make arriving in regulation a tall order, regardless of the strategy one chooses from the tee.

The thirteenth hole passes through a heavily wooded glen, giving the course its name and giving inaccurate golfers trouble.

The fifteenth reads as a short par four on the card, but with an extreme dogleg right, it takes a long drive to see the pin. Proper club selection and accuracy are important on the approach, as a misjudged shot here will reacquaint you with the hidden brook. Back-to-back par fives at the sixteenth and seventeenth give you the opportunity to use more clubs out of your bag, and help prep you for one of the most beautiful finishing holes you will find on any golf course anywhere.

Finish the course on the grand 18th, watched carefully by two eagles that sit directly above the green.

#1

A great starting hole, #1 is a slight dogleg left off the tee. A good miss off the tee is up the right side of the hole. Players should be looking to carry the greenside bunker.
